This module focuses on one of the key functions of a contemporary museum: education and learning. The unique educational potential of museums has been long recognized in museum theory and advanced in museum practice. While having been at the heart of what museums do for centuries, museum education has acquired a more prominent role in recent decades. This module introduces learning theories as they apply to the museum education context, and considers how museums can use formal and informal learning techniques to broaden their appeal and diversify their audiences. It explores methods by which practitioners can better understand the needs and motivations of their actual and potential visitors, and considers approaches to access and inclusion, designed to further community engagement and participation by breaking down physical, intellectual, sensory, cultural, attitudinal, and financial barriers.
